SS President Cleveland
Old Tokyo website with a write up of the combination passenger freighter SS President Cleveland.

Combination passenger freighters carry significant amounts of cargo
and a few hundred passengers. These are common in the Verge where the
number of passengers is low, but is higher than the dozen or so that
can be carried on a regular freighter. These are similar to the ships
in the 20th century Pacific trade prior to the introduction of the
jumbo jet. Not enough passengers to have a large dedicated passenger
ship, to many passengers to all use tramp freighters, and not enough
cargo to have just a cargo vessel.

Cinque Ports
The Cinque Ports of England were ancient coastal trading towns. During the middle ages the ports were granted charters allowing them privileges in exchange for providing ships for the king. Two links for more info:

What is a Liner
Introduction to the Liner Trade by Logistics India.

A liner isn't just passenger ships. It has a technical meaning. The article also covers, as a contrast, what Tramps are.

GURPS Traveller: Far Trader
GURPS is a game system that I've never seen played, but lots of friends and I have bought the books for the background information. In this case, GURPS Traveller: Far Trader is a very good discussion of the background for space going trade. While the book is written for use within the confines of the Traveller rules, it contains lots of basic background information based upon real world trade that it's useful for any science fiction game. You just have to know enough about your world to tweak things.
Traveller uses very small ships, with the largest listed in the book as 20,000 tons. This is comparable to general cargo ships of the 1960s before containerization took off.
The book can be bought from SJ Games.

Hiatus
Maybe the hiatus is over. Time to start adding new material to the blog.
At first it's mostly going to be links in support of a couple of projects.
I'm working on a presentation of Trade In the Honorverse. Tag should be trade. It'll mostly be links and some comments about good sites and books that talk about real world trade, types of ships and such.
I'm working on manning of ships in the Honorverse. tag should be manning. Again, links mostly to sites about real world manning. Some SF books for compare and contrast.

The Lost World of the Sailing Ships 1780-1880: An Introduction to Maritime History (course)
This was a distance learning course offered by University of Exeter in the UK. This post is more of a reminder that such courses exist than a review. Hopefully the link will remain active as the syllabus is of interest
